MURRAY, JOEL ELISABETH, AND AUDRIUS PLIOPLYS. A n indicatordilution technique for study of blood-to-brain solute passage in the rat. J . Appl. Physiol. 33(5): 681-683. 1972.-Details arc given of a method adapting single-injection indicator-dilution techniques for use in the study of blood-to-brain solute transport in vivo in the rat. Glucose extraction by brain is shown to be saturable under conditions of high circulation plasma glucose concentrations. Investigation of functional vascular anatomical relationships was made with a view toward how effectively the brain of the rat may be isolated as an "organ" for indicator-dilution studies. Indicatordilution curves obtained during simultaneous collection of venous efluent from the confluens of sinuses and the external jugular vein suggest that blood from the sinus does not contain significant admixture of extracerebral venous return and may therefore be relied on to provide information about solute extraction by brain in the rat. economy in costs for animals and supplies over studies using large mammals.

Quantitative evaluation of Blood Brain Barrier permeability in transient focal cerebral ischemia in the rat
Introduction: Development of brain edema following focal cerebral ischemia exacerbates primary ischemic injury. Blood brain barrier (BBB) opening is an important part of edema named as vasogenic brain edema. In this study, quantitative alterations of BBB permeability is experimentally evaluated using transient focal cerebral ischemia in the rat. Methods: Two groups of male rats (ischemic and sh...

YUDILEVICH, D. L., AND NORINA DE ROSE. Blood-brain transfer of glucose and other molecules measured by rapid indicator dilution. Am. J. Physiol. 220(3) : 841-846. 197 1 .-The blood-brain barrier (BBB) of the dog was studied in vivo, by means of the first-passage multiple-tracer dilution technique. Venous samples were obtained at the rate of 3-5/set, for about 5 sec. The labeled molecules used w...
متن کاملStudies of coronary blood flow by multiple dye dilution curves.
The indicator-dilution technique has recently been applied to the study of the coronary circulation. One of the methods which have been proposed is the estimation of coronary blood flow from dilution curves sampled from the right ventricle after the injection of radio-iodinated human serum albumin into the left ventricle or into a catheter "wedged" in a branch of the pulmonary artery (1). Anoth...
متن کاملBlood-tissue exchange via transport and transformation by capillary endothelial cells.
The escape of solutes from the blood during passage along capillaries in heart and skeletal muscle occurs via diffusion through clefts between endothelial cells and, for some solutes, via adsorption to or transport across the luminal plasmalemma of the endothelial cell. To quantitate the rates of permeation via these two routes of transport across capillary wall, we have developed a linear mode...
متن کاملThe Effects of L-arginine on the Hippocampus of Male Rat Fetuses under Maternal Stress
Introduction: Prenatal stress has deleterious effects on the development of the brain and is associated with behavioral and psychosocial problems in childhood and adulthood. This study aimed to determine the protective effect of L-arginine on fetal brain under maternal stress. Methods: Twenty pregnant Wistar rats (weighting 200-230 g) were randomly divided into 4 groups (n=5 for each group). T...
